Merged Trees

I noticed something very interesting in our park and walk expeditions in the new neighborhood. There are a LOT of trees that were so close to other trees while growing that they merged their trunks for many years of growth. Two or three trees merged together, even in our own backyard. All over the park across the street and in the yards of the homes near by.

It’s probably not something that would mean much to someone who’s not a huge tree lover like I am and the mother of twins like I am. One of the amazing things that separates us from other life forms is our ability and desire to assign meaning to things. And this means something to me. To find ourselves living in a place surrounded by trees who have merged together during their growth and support each other now in their trunks despite having grown their separate ways, well it certainly means a lot to me.

The first time I noticed this, Logan ran up to one of the “sides” and said “this one me, that one Forest.” I won’t deny getting chocked up. I also find this a beautiful symbolism of my life with Dusty, how we grew and supported each other for ten years and even though we have branched out different ways, we are forever connected at the foundation through our children. And isn’t that often the case in life? We merge with family and friends at various times and then branch off onto our own paths. And often that initial grounding keeps our branches constantly crisscrossing again and again as we create our canopies of life experiences.
