Thirty Months Going on Twenty Years Old
Two and a half years old, it’s as much a difference in age as 6 months to a year.
Forest’s quests for power and individuality are even more pronounced and over the top. Usually they can be managed, but sometimes there is no telling what set him off or it’s not easily fixed. Like when food items fall apart. He just can’t understand that you can’t put the muffin or banana back together when it breaks into pieces. The good news is that we’ve never had one of those throw down kicking and screaming tantrums. Well, Logan kinda had one last year but it didn’t last long and never happened again.
The boys are hysterical in the grocery store at this age. They are either fighting and hurting each other or playing that causes hysterical screaming and laughter so loud that the entire place can’t miss them. I love it when other parents or grandparents look at me knowingly though at the loud screams because I’m laughing at their antics and not in the least bit interested in shushing them.
The boys are into singing now like never before and Logan has “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” down. Forest knows all the words but Logan even has the tune down. They also love to do “Ring Around the Rosie”. So I’m starting to work on the alphabet song. They know all the letters but not the order so this seems a good time for that. They love to go into their play room where the beautiful letter’s Wendy made for their birthday are on the wall spelling out their names and spell their names. We have two cups from Grandma Warren that Aunt Jolene wrote their names on and the other day Logan knew which cup was his by spelling out the names. I’m so proud!
They made a huge leap last month realizing that letters make words. They are always saying “let me spell word!” and wanting to say the letters in the words they see at the grocery store, on signs, books, etc. Last month Logan said to me, “help me write ‘daddy”. So I showed him how to hold the pen correctly and together we wrote it out. They get it. They understand that letters are in words and words mean “things”.
They can also count to 5 without missing a number and sometimes higher without mistakes. They are making the connection that they can count on their fingers this week and after about two months of asking, “how old are you” and reinforcing with “two years old”, Forest actually said “two years old” to me earlier this week!
Now that we have a play room I’m a lot less uptight about all the toys always being put away like I had to be for sanity’s sake in our 1100 sq foot rental. So yesterday when the boys completely tore apart their train table and started to make a new train path across the room, I got into enjoying it instead of worrying about having to clean it up. I have to admit, it was pretty awesome, they did a great job.
They love to amaze me. Forest has started saying “I love you Momma” and “thank you Mommy” all on his own. It’s not every time but it’s starting to happen. Today I told them that they needed to pick up all their toys outside before they came inside and when Forest called me to come back outside and let him in, he’d actually done it! All the toys in their places and the lid even on the outside toy bin. But then Saturday Forest chose to sit on the floor next to me instead of in my lap while we read a book together saying “me sit alone”, my heart broke. As much as I dislike the “neediness” aspect of this job, it’s true that I love the snuggles and huggles and I’m no where near ready to give those up. Even Logan who spent the last few months anti-kissing is suddenly offering kisses again! It’s always amazing around here.
