Potty Training Begins
A few weeks ago I started “getting serious” about potty training. Not that it’s very serious really but I’m trying to be more regular about it. In the mornings after breakfast, we go spend some time on the pottys thanks to an M&M treat. Just one to get them willing to sit on it. It didn’t take long for them to often sit on it without needing to be bribed, but I usually make them ask for it now before giving one. We have a stash of books in the bathroom and I also use Logan’s love of iPhone games as a potty bribe. The boys are wearing underwear except for bedtimes, when we leave the house, or if I’m jumping into the shower. So we have this combination of underwear, pull-ups and diapers going on. Interestingly enough, Forest has had two poop potty successes, both times while wearing pull-ups and with no encouragement by me. I hear this little voice saying, “Mommy, me go poopy!” only to find that he’s done just that. It’s sweet to see Logan praise him and get excited for him as well.
We had bought the pottys back in December but Logan has been pretty resistant each time I’ve tried to make this step. I’ve tried for a couple days at a time over the last few months but never pushed through like this. This time I had decided I would just work with Forest if I had to because he’s been very ready for awhile. But Logan jumped on the bandwagon quickly enough and has had a couple of pee potty successes himself. I just keep asking them to go sit on the pottys as often as I think about it or about every 30 minutes. I basically have no exact expectations and am willing to just let it all unfold for them as they want to pace it. I’m hoping that all the wise advice of mothers who’ve come before about underwear helping teach faster is correct, it certainly seems to bother them every time they pee on the floor as they play.
My goal is potty trained by age three. We have 7 months so I think we’ll make it!
