A Weekend For the Boys
A few weekends ago it was all about the boys. Brad and I packed in lots of fun stuff and really centered all of our activities on the kids. It was so much fun!
Saturday morning we made our way to a much unknown part of the Austin Parks department, the Nature and Science Center, where they have around 10 owls, 4 hawks, 2 foxes, 2 bunnies, a coyote, and various other animals that have been rescued but can’t be released back into the wild because they can’t care for themselves. By arriving at opening we had the place to ourselves and let the boys run and climb and otherwise lead the way. They also have a “dinosaur dig” with plaster cast dinos covered in sand with shovels and various other tools to use to dig out the dino bones. The boys loved the place. I can’t wait to go back again.
It was small and could only hold their attention for so long before they started to wander. So we packed them back up and took them to the BIG park in town, Zilker. Our mission was the ride the train, which we did. Unfortunately it was very windy that day and the boys got cold. I think Brad enjoyed it more then anyone as he kept having flash backs to his childhood riding on it.
We’d been to the park once before and I figured this time I would do better with the boys on the playscape. No way! This thing is a big kids free for all. And with bridges that criss cross over the train tracks, it can be a parents’ nightmare if you are trying to keep an eye on two toddlers. So yeah, we’ll be checking back in another year! Then we enjoyed a nice picnic lunch on a hillside complete with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pretzels and pudding.
That afternoon we set up our big tent and let the boys play inside of it. They had so much fun and are definitely ready for a real camp out.
