Almost 21 months

Well, it’s finally happened. They are taking on more and more “toddler behavior” every day.

The boys are living on fruit, crackers, yogurt and cheese. Every now and again they’ll eat a bite of peanut butter, a few bites of chicken nuggets, a couple bites of hot dog. But mostly, they are on a super basic diet. And getting them to sit to eat a meal is almost impossible so snacks and Carnation Instant Breakfast mix in the milk makes sure they get their nutrients.

While they can make their legs go limp like you’d never guess possible and can scream so that the whole neighborhood knows their displeasure if I try and move them away from something unsafe, they are also able to understand the word “stop” and actually listen a little better then they just a month ago. It’s all very selective but it’s good to know that they can sometimes understand and obey an important command near the street.

They love playdoh and finger painting, trucks and airplanes, books and legos like you’d expect from 2 - almost 2 year old - little guys.

Forest insists on independence. He wants to peel his own banana, open his own cereal bar, put on his own shoes. If he’s not allowed to do it on his own, he throws one heck of a tantrum. Sometimes he throws tantrums for no apparent reason. I use some of the techniques I’ve heard of and read about. Time outs for biting and hitting (Forest has been really bad about these lately). Acknowledging that I understand when they are angry about something and give them words for their emotions. But most of the time, the good ol’ “redirect” of their energy does the trick.

I love their little smiles, with mouths full of teeth. I love how they like to play football (which they can say) in the house with me. We each take turns running the ball around the house while the other two chase and try to tackle. They have even started throwing overhand. I don’t like how they tell me not to sing to them, although I’ve noticed they don’t mind my singing when it’s bedtime.
