Imagination

The boys have really started to display their imaginations in the last few months. It started out with things that we had showed them. I showed them that you can use an empty cup or spoon to pretend to eat and drink. They then began offering their sippy cups to a favorite stuffed animal or when playing with spoons and offering something imaginary to eat to a stuffed friend, one of us parents or recently even the cats. Then they began pretending to be dogs, cats or even snakes. I love that they’ll just drop to the floor and start slithering and hissing or walking on all fours and meowing or panting.

This week I’ve seen some really cool things because we never showed it to them, they created them all on their own. Like the other day when we were outside and Logan picked up a small stick, walked over to the front door and started trying to put it into the key hole saying “key, key”. And this morning when Forest took a slender mailing tube, put his arm into it and started raising it up and down and doing his elephant sounds.

Another interesting thing has come up. Forest is showing me that he identifies common symbolism for snakes. Any time he sees a sideways squiggle, he makes his snake hiss sound. I find this fascinating. He even did it with a friends brick garden divider yesterday. Is this something that we come in with as humans? Ability to recognize certain symbols? It’s certainly nothing he’s ever been taught.

Just like colicky babies make it up to you be smiling; toddlers who kick and scream through diaper changes make it up to you by pretending. I can’t stop saying it, this is such a neat age!

Re: pretending — yes, it’s so true! I get sooooo tired of being kicked in the gut over a simple diaper change (now dubbed “Mama’s Patented 30-second Diaper Change….really it’s not that bad!”), but then she turns around and does something amazing and adorable. ~sigh~ So in love. :)

It is fascinating just to watch them learn, isn’t it? I remember my son when he pretended to be a cat… oh and we had a cat a very loooooong time. Actually, it’s a baby cat to be more precise.

The thing is, it gets more and more interesting every day. My son is now 3 and he just amazes me everyday. And I bet the fun just never stops with twins. I can’t wait!
