Further Confessions
I’ve been laughing at myself a lot these past six months. I think my mother has been laughing at me as well.
I had a lot of convictions about how I was going to raise my kids - before I became a parent. I read up on the APA website and their guidelines for television and such. And yet I find myself letting my kids watch Little Einsteins (I LOVE this show, I admit it). We don’t have cable so it’s not like the tv is on all day or anything. But there are times when I have completely forsaken my pre-baby convictions to use tv while I take a shower, make dinner, when they are sick, or otherwise rowdy and need a calm down. We cuddle during Disney movies like Brother Bear or Cars. We learn about animals together and dance together. We use the AppleTV so the boys get 5 minute Sesame Street Podcasts about brushing their teeth and eating healthy.
I’m not proud but I’m also not ashamed. It’s cute, it’s fun and they do seem to learn from these things because we take an active role in what they watch, how much they watch and we usually watch with them (except during showers and food prep as mentioned previously).
Like everything else we figure it out as we go along. I’m working hard not to compare myself to the other moms that I meet who seem to have it all put together because they are still breastfeeding, use cloth diapers or never let their kiddos watch tv. Forest and Logan are really healthy and really happy little guys so I figure that while I may not always be the ideal, I’m still a good momma.

you are not a good mama…you are a GREAT mama, a stupendously fabulously wonderful mama. and you do it all right because they are lovely.
my boys have been tuning into sesame street, and plaza de sesamo at times) and i just make sure i sit with them, sing with them and talk to them about it all. i cannot wait until they will ‘watch’ a bit more of a movie as i love so many disney ones.
