Forest the Deceiver
For a long while now Forest has enjoyed a little game where he will pretend to feed you something (like a cheerio, french fry, etc.) and then right as you go to bite down on it he yanks it away and eats it himself. He thinks it’s incredibly amusing, giggling as he eats the food that you thought you were getting. For a while now I’ve been predicting that he will be the one to develop a more devious and crafty personality. He’ll likely be the one that really enjoys a good practical joke…
Anyhow, it would appear that my prediction may be coming true, because he’s flat out tricked me TWICE in the past week or so, and I’m usually very observant of what’s going on around me and people’s motivations so that’s not very easy to do… Recently we’ve begun putting the boys in “time-out” in their cribs when they do something mean like hit each other or do something we tell them not to like stand in the window-sill. The other day Logan was being especially disobedient and kept standing in the window-sill so I had to put him in time-out three or four times. After the first couple times Forest would follow us into the boys’ bedroom and would point at his crib and nod his head yes indicating that he wanted to go in his crib. Since I was using the cribs for time-out with Logan I didn’t want to confuse Forest by putting him in there so I led him back out to the living room. The third time he saw me put Logan in time-out, he waited for me to come back into the living room, made sure I was watching him, and climbed up into the window-sill himself and giggled as I told him to get down. He wouldn’t get down when told so I had to put him in time-out, which was EXACTLY what he wanted me to do, because he cried and screamed as I took him into his room but as soon as I put him in his crib he got this HUGE grin on his face and giggled and pointed at his bed, flopped down on it, and rolled around laughing at me.
The second time he tricked me was earlier today. The boys have taken a liking to “hopping on pop” where they will sit on my belly as I’m lying down and then bounce up and down. It’s fun for a few seconds but then it has to stop before I loose my lunch. Earlier today Logan was doing this, and I eventually had to make him stop, but afterward Forest wanted to bounce on me also. I told him no so I could give my stomach a rest and asked him to play with a toy or something. It was getting near nap time so the boys were already acting a little sleepy, as was I, so Forest played with a toy for a minute or two (just long enough for me to not make the connection of what was about to happen), then went and got his bunny that he sleeps with, came and crawled up in my lap, gave me a big hug, and snuggled into my arms like he wanted to lay on me. So of course I lay down and let him lay on my chest which he likes to do. The next thing I know, he springs up, throws his bunny down to the side and starts hopping on my belly!!!
I’m gonna have to find this kid a “Boy who cried wolf” book. He’s definitely the one we’re going to have to think extra creatively about as he grows up in order to keep him in check… It’s too bad that Dawn didn’t like my idea of naming the boys “Optimus Prime” and “Megatron” after the leaders of the Autobots and Decepticons (respectively) in the Transformers cartoons. Logan was born first so he would have been named Optimus and Forest would have been named, appropriately, Megatron. At least their personalties would have fit their names…
