Robot vs. Toddler
Forest loves to push buttons. If there is anything around with buttons on it, he’s there pushing them. A month or two ago, I purchased a Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner to run a few times a week and help keep my floors clean. It being a robot and all, it has lots of buttons on it. It’s recharging docking bay is located on the floor in the living room below the fish tank. Normally I have it fenced off when the boys are spending time at my house but one day I didn’t. Forest made short work of finding it and proceeding to push all of it’s buttons. Every once in a while one of the buttons would make a sound, or make lights flash, but eventually he managed to push the big “CLEAN” button right in the middle. The Roomba started up, lighting up it’s lights, playing a little tune, vacuum motor whirring up, all kinds of fun for Forest! He grinned and laughed, and was so excited about the commotion he’d managed to cause, until it started moving…
The Roomba slowly backed off of it’s charging dock, spun around, and charged right at Forest! He was surprised to say the least, and I think it freaked him out a little… he scooted backwards a bit but the Roomba kept on coming… The way the Roomba works, it goes in one direction until it bumps into somehting, then slightly turns and tries again. If it still bumps into something, it slightly turns again, and so forth until it’s managed to turn far enough so that it will go around whatever it’s bumping into. Unfortunately, when it hit Forest (who was sitting on the ground), it bumped into his leg on one side and turned towards him to try again! Forest was a little scared at this point and puffed out his bottom lip to begin to cry and looked up at me with this “what did I get myself into” look that was both heartbreaking and hilarious at the same time. Anyhow, I picked him up to save him from the marauding killer robot and used it’s remote-control to send it back to it’s docking bay.
Forest hasn’t touched the Roomba since…
