The Nap Transition v2.2
When I started this transition earlier in the week, I knew that it would be a process of figuring out what works. The first two days the boys made it staying up until 11 but then only napped for an hour and a half. This made for some grumpy babies by mid afternoon, so it was early to bed to make up for the lost sleep. They did good through both nights but started waking up at around 4 AM this morning and were wide awake and uber grumpy by 5:30. After weeks of them sleeping well until 5:30 and not waking up until 6:15-6:30, this just won’t do.
I came across some additional advice on the babywhisper.com regarding the nap transition. I’ve been following her simply because it’s the most detailed information about this transition that I can find online (here are the details) and because it makes sense to me. Since they are definitely not ready for the full “one nap” move I’m going to back off and try a new route. Now we are going to have the same nap times as before (9:30 – 10 and 2 – 2:30) but cut the morning nap short at an hour so that the afternoon nap goes back to being a given. This way when they are ready for the next step it should be the morning nap that becomes less and less needed and the afternoon nap can just move forward. This works out today since they are tired from getting up early so they’ll be going down for a morning nap at around 9:30 and well… I’ll keep you posted on how the rest unfolds.
