no trained monkeys here

I learn a lot and am inspired by other moms. It is often the most casual comment or conversation that can make a big impact on me. Last week we had a play date with Ab and Oz, The Silverbabies. I was trying to get one of my boys to demonstrate something or other to Tracey and of course, as usual, he wouldn’t. They never do things to show off for others, I mean, why should they? It was then that Tracey said something that has really stuck with me as important and really reflects positively on her as a mom and something I plan to remember from now on. She mentioned that (no exact quotes here but general idea as I remember it) she used to do that until realizing one day that they aren’t trained monkeys and that she wouldn’t want that done to her so she doesn’t ask it of them. I couldn’t agree more. So no more asking the boys to “perform” their “tricks”. Just letting them show what they want, when they want, to whom they want.

I had also recently been thinking about buying booster seats to get the boys closer to the table. I just feel like they are ready to sit at the table and stop being separated by their trays. Seeing how Tracey did it inspired me and that evening I tore into their high chairs and figured out how to move a little of this and change a lot of that and presto chango! The boys now sit at the table with us! And we really enjoyed that this weekend having meals around the table together as a family. Something I had growing up and always swore my children would have. And we are on that path already.

So thank you Tracey and all the moms who inspire me daily in person or through your blogs.
