then and now

One year ago this week their idea of fun was laying in the crib watching the mobile. Now they tear apart the Little People Farm while Logan sings a tune. They used to sleep swaddled on their backs in our bed at night and took naps in the swing or bouncy chair. Now they sleep on their tummies with their butts in the air. Then, we could lay them across the width of the crib and still have room, but now they take up half of the length. Logan’s colic kept us up then, now they sleep through the night. They were getting all of their nourishment from me then, yesterday we took them for meatballs and french fries at Ikea.

People talk about how fast it goes but those words don’t even come close to the experience. The dynamic change that occurs in the first year of a life is so profound that it’s hard to find the words to express the admiration I have for nature. A year ago I gave birth to these two little boys without knowing what they would look like or who they would be. I now have some momentary inkling of their personalities and their appearance is so cute I get all goofy inside.
