inevitable

The inevitable diaper rash has come to disrupt our happy home. We made it a good six months before ever seeing a single rash and then up until a few weeks ago we only saw one or two small ones on Logan. But as we approached a year old, Logan has been getting them every week or two and Forest recently had a one. Not the horrible ones they use as examples on websites, thank goodness, but bad enough to require sink cleanings and letting Logan run around the house bare bottomed. It’s a good thing we have tile through most of the house!

I tend to go to www.askdrsears.com for most medical advice for my boys (except when serious and requiring their real pediatrician which so far hasn’t been necessary at all). I may not be a die hard attachment parent but Dr. Sears really gets it that his website is a resource and has been kind enough to go into lots of details so that those of us parents who refer to the internet the way our mother’s called on their pediatricians so we can find a wealth of information. Dosages for ibuprofen and acetaminophen based on weights, detailed info about diaper rash, etc. We found out recently that Logan’s rashes involve fungus so we use a mix of A&D zinc cream, Clotrimazole anti-fungal cream, and Hydrocortisone 1% cream. The A&D is used at every diaper change, the clotrimazole 3 times a day and the Hydracortisone is used twice a day. We never used to have to use anything on the little guys but now we use A&D even when there is no diaper rash.

The biggest problem is the poop. You know you’re a parent of babies when you sit around after dinner discussing your baby(ie)s poop like Brad and I did last night. The boys tend to go through phases of diarrhea, which earlier this week our pediatrician said is normal for toddlers. But it’s those darn phases that cause the trouble. I am having to give up putting pants on Logan so that I can smell things as soon as they happen and get those diapers changed. Every moment is important to the health of that poor little bum.
