Changing Speeds
It was the end of September last year when I quit working. I wasn’t particularly happy in my job so leaving early to accommodate the twin pregnancy was not difficult for me. I really enjoyed the pregnancy, in many ways because I was able to nap twice a day and get a lot of “me” time. It was an emotional time since Dusty and I were no longer living together. So all that alone time was also really good for me emotionally. I spent those last three months being a full time incubator and was very blessed to have had that option. Since the boys were born I’ve been a busy stay at home mom, which like incubation is not considered a paid position. I get paid in laughter and hugs.
Because my income is not a valid currency for the payment of bills, we’ve recently assessed our priorities and are going to make some changes. We aren’t in a huge hole or anything but we wanted to take action to stay on top. The idea of waking up one morning and realizing we owed ten thousand dollars was unacceptable.
The first major decision was to become a one car family. My car is upside down so it was Brad’s car that we decided to sell. Brad had taken the bus in previous months and since the bus stop is right down the street he’s excited to force himself to use his bike to get there. We have talked about various things that might come up and are pretty much ready to deal with them. We also feel good about being environmentally aware and no longer needing to fill two gas tanks. A lot about this decision makes us feel good and just in general “right”. We even made a little money from the sell to immediately apply to our debt. We just had to buy a brand new mattress after a year of intense back pain for me. Which has now been resolved thanks to the Simmons Beautyrest.
I’m working hard to become a better grocery shopper. Checking out all the local stores to find out who has various foods that we eat for cheaper. Do you have any idea how much cheaper baby food is at Walmart compared to grocery stores? I hate supporting Walmart on a regular basis but right now the priority is saving money so that’s what’s going to happen. I’m cutting more coupons. Eating well is important to us as is eating organic and healthy so this is one area we don’t want to skimp on and a reason we are changing bigger things like our car situation. Of course our Costco membership is an overall big plus as well.
I’ve also switched to the generic store brand formula and the boys don’t know the difference. Everything I’ve read has me convinced that there is no difference so I’m comfortable with this choice.
I’m sure that there will be other things that pop up over time but for now we are embarking on one more step in our grand adventure!
