various things

Breastfeeding is going well.  I have my moments when I worry that I’m not producing enough and such, just because I’m new to all of this, but the boy’s weight gain and some pumping experiments have proven that all is well.

Cloth diapers are not working out for us.  I spend so much time doing laundry because of the diaper covers (we are using a diaper service) and these tend to leak.  Perhaps I could try various methods and try and make this work but I’m giving up with no apologies.  We’ve had to use disposables at various times and I find that these are much less likely to leak and  thus cause more laundry.  So five more weeks on the cloth diaper contract and then we’ll be switching full time to disposables.

Colic?  Acid reflux?  Temperament?  Newborns are the source of great mystery as they are unable to tell you what hurts where so you find yourself sucked into this game of process of elimination.  Anything and everything to calm the crying baby and find a way to eliminate whatever started him crying in the first place.  Sometimes you can but sometimes you can’t.  I had no idea about all this before having a baby but it seems that their poor little digestive systems (from the moment they drink the milk until the moment it leaves for the diaper) are very sensitive and you can literally feel it working through them and see the looks of discomfort on their faces because of this.  Poor Logan has a sensitive temperament so you get to hear the discomfort as he screams his way through it.  Poor Logan and poor Mommy and Daddy and 3 cats.  Medicine for acid reflux - 2 days down, I’ll let you know if it helps.  Happiest Baby on the Block DVD has calming womb sounds for “crying baby” and “done crying but could start again soon” - all praise to these sounds!  Gripe Water, helps but does it?  So yeah… process of elimination… is it 3 months yet?  Everyone says that all this goes away at 3-4 months.  But who’s counting?

If you ever decide to take up cloth diapering again, go with Fuzzi Bunz. They are significantly easier than prefolds and covers and we very rarely have leaks (even with one kid who has chronic diarrhea and is a heavy wetter). If I had started with prefolds or Kissaluvs (another leaky brand, in my opinion), my kids would be in Pampers by now too.

Glad to hear the breastfeeding is going well! Yay, Momma!

Not so glad to hear about the reflux. I am sure everyone has told you this already, but try putting a crib wedge in the cosleeper (I think I saw a cosleeper in one of the pictures a while ago, right?) so that they are sleeping on an angle. Also try to keep them somewhat upright for at least 20 minutes after a feed. If Zantac is the med they are on, don’t be surprised if it works for a while and then all of a sudden stops working. This is pretty typical for Zantac and babies often have to be switched over to Prilosec or Prevacid for relief. Gripe water didn’t work for us, though some people swear by it. Mylicon is another one that didn’t work for us but does for some people, so you might want to give that a try, too. Also, do you swaddle? Our colicky baby LOVED to be swaddled in the Amazing Miracle Blanket (available on Amazon or at miracleblanket.com) and it made a huge difference in her sleep.

As always, email me if I can help at all… or email me to tell me to stop bothering you!

I never even bothered with cloth. The swaddler’s work alot better than pampers dry or huggies. I’ve yet to try Luvs. I’m gonna stick with swaddlers until he outgrows them.

As for the acid reflux or gas… I use Little Tummy’s and that seems to help alot with his gas. My sister used the Mylicon and she liked it.
