colic
It’s amazing to realize how much you can get done and not get done when your life is cut up into 3 hour intervals. Actually, it is more like 2 hours because I spend an hour changing, feeding and loving on the boys which takes about a 30 minutes to an hour.
And when Logan is being “colicy” it takes even longer. I never knew what Colic was but now I’m about as expert as one can be on something that is totally not understood. Starting in the evening usually between 7 - 9 PM, Logan gets so fussy and cries so hard, he’s inconsolable. Until we watched the “Happiest Baby on the Block” video that is. Now we swaddle, we rock, we bounce, we sush, we swing, and we even listen to the 40 minutes of “heartbeat in uteuro” sounds recorded on the dvd for our sanity. Oh yeah, and the hair dryer totally calms a colic baby too. We’ve discovered that Logan enjoys laying on his side and stomach on our knees and likes having his back patted.
They think colic is related to the nervous system being too immature to handle all the various input going on during the day and that a time of “cooling off through overload” is used to help deal with it all. It is also believed that it has to do with gas and acid reflux. I definitely think that Logan is dealing with all of the above and not a happy camper during those times. Since discovering all the tricks, it isn’t that bad. Although last night the colic didn’t start until after the 12:30 AM feeding so that kinda sucked. But by the 3:30 AM feeding he was so exhausted he passed right out after eating. So with a little tag team action Brad and I both got sleep and were able to help the baby deal with a bad time. And really this is the only way to deal with it because what works and doesn’t work changes daily and by the minute. Having someone to pass off the baby too when you are at the end of your rope makes all the difference in the world. And interestingly enough a new face and set of arms also seems to help calm him!
The good news is that colic doesn’t usually last past the 3rd or 4th month so, like everything else that is less then “fun” about having a newborn, there is an end in sight.
