Cats in the Cradle
Anyone who has cats can tell you two things about them. First, that they think that everything in the house is for them. I mean you obviously bought that bag or put down that piece of paper for their pleasure. Second, that they have favorite places to sleep during the day and there is some kind of rotation of these places that defies a set pattern. They’ll always be on the bed between 3 – 8 PM for several months and then it suddenly becomes your computer chair. Since putting up the crib and starting to set up the boys’ room the curiosity meter has been off the charts.
Anya was the first to jump into the crib and claim it as part of her daily nap rotation. ![]()
Then Sukhi gave it a try. We didn’t catch them at first, it was the fact that bunnies were strewn randomly around the crib and no longer perfectly placed like before. And when I moved bunnies out suspecting what was going on, the bumber that was rolled neatly into a corner became unrolled and suspiciously covered in cat hair. Then one day we caught Anya and Sukhi cuddling in the crib. It is seriously heartachingly cute. I keep thinking that this is preparing me for the future cuteness of seeing the boys cuddled together.
To make it all better, Jasmine is starting to move from simple tolaration of her new sister cats to sleeping in close quarters with them, as I caught here in the crib.
I’ve had a few people ask if I’m worried about them jumping in the crib and setting that pattern now or even suggest that I shouldn’t let them do it. But honestly, cats freak out when babies are around. It’s like they have some inability to comprehend that they are just small humans. An inner sense of caution kicks in as they rush under the bed in panic instead of the usual attention seeking that they have with new humans. I have no doubts that once the boys come home and are put down into the crib the cats will realize it is not their space any longer and leave well enough alone. And until then I’m going to enjoy them making use of the special space.
