Tricky
Parties are tricky. I’ve always had a hard time making a guest list because we have such an extended group of friends. You never want to hurt someone’s feelings, never want someone to feel left out. But it’s inevitable isn’t it? For example, Wendy is throwing me a baby shower on Sunday. My first invite list was probably around 70 people, which is obviously too many. Wendy has a beautiful house but it’s not a mansion! So I had to sit down and think about cutting it down. It’s a “couples’ shower” because men and women are both an important part of my family of friends so I didn’t want to leave my brothers out. Which also meant that I wanted to get input from Dusty and Brad about who they’d like to invite, including family since Dusty’s is in Texas and Brad’s are even in Austin.
So I thought about how to decide on who to invite and found what I think is a logical method. Who are the people that I talk to almost daily? There were some people I wanted to invite because it had been so long since we’d seen each other but it just felt rude to make our first meeting in 6 months a party that involves gifts. It doesn’t mean that I don’t care about them or think about them regularly. But we all have such limited time and energy and all end up making choices about who we stay in regular contact with.
The older I get the more comfortable I am with this. I have moments when I doubt myself and over think it all trying to find solutions to make everyone happy. But moving into a space where I am secure in myself is helping me let go of those moments much easier and just hope that everyone else is as secure in themself - because if so then they will understand as well.
