Chiropractic care of a pregnant woman

Last week I did some research on the internet and found a listing of chiropractors in Austin who are certified in the Webster Technique. http://www.icpa4kids.com/about/webster_technique.htm The Webster technique is a chiropractic way of helping adjust your pelvis correctly so that breech babies will most likely turn and move into proper position. Dusty found out that our insurance does provide for 12 visits a year with a copay so on Tuesday morning I called one of the offices near home and got an appointment that day.  I figured that asside from the turning prospect I am also curious to see how it can help my other pregnancy discomforts.
I really liked the office. It’s clean and comfortable with spa like music and yummie candles burning. The staff appears to be an office manager, a husband and wife chiropractors and a massage therapist. The wife does pediatrics and pregnant women. I loved talking with her! She spent time learning about me as well as gave a lot of various advice about ways to improve things that are bothering.  We also had a great conversation about the importance of a good bra or two after my milk comes in (including a referrel to the same place, Petticoat Fair, that Wendy went to after Avery was born for really good bras). It was an open and honest conversation with another women who had experienced birth, including a c-section for one child. She explained that she’s had good success with the Webster and she’s had experience with twins, although never in two placentas. The goal is to properly align my pelvis and then do work on the ligaments holding the uterus in place.

She doesn’t do hardcore popping but said if I ever felt the need for that her husband would be able to do things as needed in that area. Maternity chiropractics is focused on use of the adjusting table and a metal instrument called an Activator that she had that caused a popping sound.
She started off using the adjusting table to work on the pelvic area. I was able to “lay” on my stomach for the first time in 6 months! She also worked on the problems I’m having in my glut ligaments (may not actually be siatica). Then I layed on my back while she worked on my pelvic area both using the activator and some trigger point massage. Finally the chiropractor spent time touching the belly and feeling the location of the babies. Over the past months, I have experienced times when I touched my belly only to find really sore spots and always thought it had something to do with the babies but she told me that these are knots in the muscle and to go ahead and work them out by pressing in because they go away quickly and it’ll help keep my belly loose and comfortable.

I have another appointment on Friday and then plan to continue to see her once a week for the next four weeks. I’m curious to see if this helps me feel better. One of the most interesting things was that I felt like I was getting sick last night. I had to wonder if it is like massage where doing this body work released toxins into my system. But I feel fine today so prehaps that’s the case.
